Lt. Gen. Bacha Debele reaffirmed Ethiopia’s unwillingness to resolve the dispute with Sudan and Egypt militarily. But he said he was ready for it.
He made the remarks in an interview with Russian RT Television after attending the 9th International Security Conference in Moscow, Russia.
Asked if the military would resolve the dispute over the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, Lt. Gen. Bacha said: “My country’s water issue should not be the cause of war; “Therefore, the solution cannot be military. The best solution is through dialogue with the African Union.”
He added that the Egyptian side does not want to resolve the issue through negotiations. They come to discuss and reject all ideas. In my opinion, the best solution is a negotiation; They cannot solve the problem militarily, ”he said.
Lt. Gen. Bacha: The Egyptians will not try to attack the dam; But even if you try, you will not be able to solve the problem or eliminate the problem; The dam cannot be destroyed by bombs and fighter jets, they know the strength of the dam, ”he said.
“I hope we can solve the problem through dialogue,” said Lt. Gen. Bacha.
