African Union suspends Mali
The African Union (AU) has suspended Mali’s membership following a military-led coup last week. The union also warned that sanctions would be imposed if the military did not relinquish power.
Last week, Mali’s interim president Bah Nidaw and Prime Minister Moktar Ouani were ousted in a coup led by Colonel Alimi Goita.
Two coups have taken place in Mali in nine months. The mastermind behind both coups is Colonel Asim Goata, who declared himself president of Mali last Friday.
